Pikangikum Fire Rescue Logo 

Longer explanation of the design and development

In its simplest form, the Pikangikum Fire Rescue logo is a natural blend of the official Pikangikum Community Logo and the traditional St. Florian's Cross, the internationally recognized fire service emblem used by thousands of professional fire departments throughout North America.

This identity was developed through collaboration with Indigenous leadership, the Indigenous Fire Service Directory (IFSD), First Nations fire personnel, emergency management and fire service professionals, and graphic design contributors. 

The branding direction and design concepts were discussed with Fire Services Board Chair Buster Kurahara and Fire Chief Roley Peters, whose input helped shape the final identity before the preferred concept was selected for refinement and adoption.

Multiple concepts were explored and refined to ensure the final design reflected the culture, values and aspirations of the Pikangikum community while incorporating internationally recognized fire and emergency service symbolism. 

The final crest respectfully incorporates the central elements of the official Pikangikum Community Logo, symbolizing that the Fire Department exists first and foremost to serve its community. Together, these elements represent a shared commitment to community, service, professionalism, courage and Indigenous identity.

The logo was developed as part of a collaborative branding initiative led by Fire Commissioner Gary Foo through the Indigenous Fire Service Directory (IFSD) project. With more than three decades of experience in organizational branding, communications, visual identity, standards development and emergency services leadership, Gary has directed the creation of logos, branding systems and professional identities for emergency services, public safety organizations, charities, government agencies and commercial enterprises. His work has contributed to numerous high-profile organizations and initiatives, with many of those brands, logos and visual identities remaining in active use today, including a number protected as registered trademarks.

Throughout the development process, concepts were refined through consultation with Indigenous stakeholders, emergency service professionals and graphic design contributors to ensure the final identity reflected both community values and professional emergency service traditions.

During the design process, more than twelve logo concepts and variations were developed and presented for consideration. After reviewing the available options, Fire Chief Roley Peters selected the foundation of the design that best represented his vision for Pikangikum Fire Rescue. 

Following his selection, the project team undertook a final refinement process, enhancing the artwork, symbolism and composition while preserving the integrity of both the official Pikangikum Community Logo and the internationally recognized traditions of the fire and emergency services profession. 

The result is a distinctive and enduring visual identity that honours the Pikangikum community's heritage while representing the professionalism, integrity, courage, pride and commitment expected of a modern First Nations Fire and Emergency Service.
